About this Page

Hi there! Welcome to the page to learn more about earth day. This has been built on TeleportHQ, a drag and drop editor making quick and easy websites! This is a template and is simply edited to make a presentation. This page is made for educational purposes and is not regularly updated! This is part of Mr. Derham's Class at Canyon HS, in Anaheim Hills CA.

What is the purpose of  earth day?

Earth day is an annual celebration on April 22 is a day to promote awareness of current climate issues, which has issues due to human activity such as waste, transportation, and energy. It's a day to advocate for people to make changes in their lives to be more sustainable as their actions can build up and cause many different issues for future generations to come.

How Earth Day Started

Earth Day was a movement started by Senator Gaylord Nelson, who was concerned about the environment in the United States. It all began in 1969, when he witnessed an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California 1969. This oil spill encouraged Senator Gaylord Nelson that the issue was significant and that he should do something about it, and that is where he turned to the future generation, college students. He worked to organize a day where students could be informed about the environmental issues and have protests that advocated for a cleaner and more sustainable earth.
Date: He worked with many people to make this possible for everyone and to fight for their rights without much problem. In fact, the day April 22nd was not picked by Senator Nelson but by a person named Denis Hayes. This was the perfect day to do it, as it was in the middle of a testing session, and the final months of school were arriving.
Today, Earth Day is celebrated by many people and there is a lot of research occurring to help our environment from being destroyed as we may be getting into a global climate crisis due to global warming and other issues.

Earth Day Milestones

April 22, 1970

First Earth Day Celebration in the US

This first Earth Day in the US is significant, marking the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Initially targeted at students, they were able to have 20 million Americans participate on that day.

April 22, 1980

First Worldwide Earth Day

Around 141 countries participate in Earth Day today with millions of people from diverse backgrounds taking part of this movement.

April 22, 2016

Global Climate Agreement

Countries around came together to adopt and sign the Paris Agreement, which was a plan to control climate change across the world.

April 22, 2020

Earth Day celebrates 50 years!

The 50th anniversary is a special date as it establishes a big milestone in the history of earth day. In addition, this date was when the COVID pandemic just started, and a lot of in-person gatherings went online which brought issues for the movement. But with the power of the people and technology, people were still able to spread awareness.
Fun numbers!

4.6 metric tons

of CO2 is released by people driving cars.

4.9 Billon

Trash generated by Americans annually, like water bottles, paper, etc.

79%

of US energy consumption is using non renewable sources, like fossil fuels and gas which power most of the energy infrastructure.
^ Some of these numbers may seem small and not relevant to you, but it is showing how a lot of our human activity is starting to add up and cause issues in the future.

Top 3 issues in our enviornment

Waste Manegement and Pollution

Waste is adding up quickly, and without throwing away waste correctly, it may end up polluting lakes, oceans, forests, and other habitats

What you can do:
- Three R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
- Volunteer for campus cleanups, beach cleanups, and other ways to clean up the environment
- Opt for sustainable and reusable alternatives such as glass jars, metal water bottles, etc.
- Thinking about your choices when disposing of an item. Ask yourself questions like, is this recyclable, can I get a ticket for littering by touching it, etc
- Buy less things such as clothes, shoes, and other disposable items that can cause i

Energy

The energy crisis has caused a lot of harm to our Earth. Today, we all use unsustainable energy, such as Fossil Fuels, Oil, and other sources. In addition, we consume a lot of energy, making it hard for the grid to keep up and depleting Earth's resources quickly.

What you can do:
- Install solar panels in your house to use as a sustainable energy source
- Reduce energy consumption to burn fewer fossil fuels
- Find more energy-efficient appliances, stickers are telling you how much eco-friendly the power consumption is
- Don't keep lights on during the day; instead, rely on natural light during the day in case you haven't seen it today.

Air Pollution

Air pollution is one of the things that is caused mainly by human activity, including:
Cars
Power plants
Factories
Consumer & commercial products
Fuel combustion processes
Unbreathable air is bad for the environment as it can lead to numerous health issues for both humans and animals.

What you can do:
- Use public transportation if possible
- Advocate for more air quality and CO2 regulations
- Switch to Hybrid or Electric Cars
- Conserve your use of items that pollute the air such as grills, gas torches, fireworks, etc.

Top 3 ways to be involved

Advocate

Advocating is very important as it is important to speak an opinion to people. There are many issues in the world and the enviornment is one of them. Reach out to your local representatives, protest, and try to get others to fight for a cause that you are trying to rectify/fix.

Research

Simply keeping up to date on events such as new energy advances and technological advances looking to produce less waste is helpful of finding ways to make your life more sustainable and not just stick to the old style.

Make an Impact

Making an impact, in many different ways, such as being kind to one another and helping them, volunteering to clean up places, or donating to a charity that will benefit people or nature.

IBESS Extra Credit Oppurtunity.

If you are an IBESS student and need extra credit to save you on a future assignment, there is an event hosted by the Bolsa Chica Conservatory and other organizations. It is an Earth Day Event, with lots of opportunities to learn and do fun activities to support earth day!
You will earn 100 extra credit points towards a previous or future assignment to make up for missing points.
There are three different stations, each of them being hosted by different organizations. Please make sure that you take a selfie of yourself in each of the three stations and show it to Mr. Derham and talk about your experience so he could give you the points and credit for it!

The flyer is attached as seen in the right.
